Surface : A film from underneath by Tu

"Surface is an experimental film, exploring the emotional journey from an underground urban perspective. This 'urban symphony' transforms human actions and street objects into beats that harmoniously compose a grand audio and visual composition. The film emphasizes the ideas of ‘point of contact’, ‘human identity’ and notion of ‘live footprints’."

Hit the word Film on this page to see the video and or the word Process to view how the Film was made. The filmmaker Tu adapted the idea of an unconventional perspective from below via Richi Owaki's art installation.

Gestural Music Sequencer: Sound Globules

"The audio in this lava lamp video was created by analyzing the frames in real-time with the GMS or gestural music sequencer. Each frame is processed to find the brightest pixel. The x coordinate is converted into pitch while the y coordinate is translated into dynamics. The application was also designed to use probability distributions on pitch and durations. Most of the brightness is in the center, but when bright globs float down the right side higher pitches can be heard in the piece."

Josh Clos has produced a documentary about the Gestural Music Sequencer or GMS recently. His short video interview illustrates what the GMS does and how he has been using it to compose music in real-time.

Catherine Mohr : : Fascinating ....... but not for the squeamish

Marking the dawn of interventionist surgery Catherine Mohr begins her talk about Surgery's past, present and robotic future. She introduces the history of surgery which is now recognized as having begun up to 15,000 years ago with Trepanation, although she adds the history of science can't yet clarify if the practice was much as medical or ritual, except that there's firm evidence in recovered skulls that patients survived the procedure and went on to live longer lives.

Catherine Mohr then refers to surgery's pre-painkiller, pre-antiseptic past, then demos some of the newest tools for surgery through tiny incisions, performed using nimble robot hands..

With the recent emergence of the Robotic Da Vinci Wrist, surgery now enters a new age of interventionist surgical procedures, using robots to make surgery safer and to go places where human wrists and eyes simply can't. Although not quite Tron, yet it now seems to be just around the corner, virtually speaking, that is.

Signtific Lab Experiment 2: Blended Realities

Here seems to be a futurology product and web organization tool that may well attract many an outlier, bioneer or web nerd; the video begins

"In 2019, we live on superstructured realities, where physical life and digital life can merge together any way you choose. Life is a customized blend of what you want to see, who you want to be, and what you want to know."

This future software package offers you choices of creating simulations which provides you with illusions of reality by harnessing the power of augmented and virtual reality technologies. Signtific is also a place where you can study Thalassophy or the philosophy of water.

I'm left wondering if Signtific ain't all just some sort of satirical pun but cloaked in such a way that Signtific could also be quite real or pehaps a piece of fancy foot tapping art !

Riddon : A conceptual Diamagnetic Levitation Hoverbike

More and more of today's geeky gadgets and inventions that are now universal products like cell phones were initially drawn and rendered for sci fi movies and tv shows. so its no coincedence that many more ideas will surface into our lives as real everyday objects of conveniance.

Ivan Tantsiura has developed this "Riddon" levitation transporter into fictional realization via computer graphic animation at Papam Studios.

"The design was made with physical and logical considerations and the levitation technology direction is Diamagnetic Levitation based on molecular magnetism" via

The music track is a song by Depreche Mode reinterpreted by Mike Shinoda.

Paper Computing by Leah Buechley

"The sensors in this video are skin-conductance sensors painted directly onto the page. They are resistive sensors that are measuring the resistance between 2 conductive plates/areas of paint. When you put your hand on a sensor, the sensor measures the resistance of your body. This value changes as you change the amount of skin touching the sensor, pressure, etc."

Leah is a well-known expert in the field of electronic textiles (e-textiles), and her work in this area includes developing a method for creating cloth printed circuit boards (fabric PCBs) and designing the commercially available LilyPad Arduino toolkit.

In this next video, Simon Young speaks with Dr Leah Buechley, keynote speaker at Co-Lab’s recent Creating Technologies Conference, about the blending of technology and fashion, empowering girls to work in tech, and the reinvention of manufacturing.

Biomimicry : Scientists create a new extremely tough bio-inspired hybrid Ceramic

Scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have produced a new ceramic material that mimics the toughness of Mother of pearl, or nacre that is four times stronger than artificial bone.

"Through the controlled freezing of suspensions in water of an aluminum oxide (alumina) and the addition of a well known polymer, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA),we have emulated nature's toughening mechanisms to make ice-templated alumina hybrids that are comparable in specific strength and toughness to aluminum alloy. We believe these model materials can be used to identify key microstructural features that should guide the future synthesis of bio-inspired, yet non-biological, light-weight structural materials with unique strength and toughness." Continue

Here is a video demonstration, close up in the lab of how this new tough, is made.

"Conceptualized by Alpay Kasal of Lit Studios and Sam Ewen of Interference Inc. Designed/constructed by Alpay Kasal. This is a patent pending touch capable mirror. The interactive mirror features proximity sensors, gesturing, and both nearfield and farfield infrared."

The sound bed to this demo video almost sounds like a jingle already, nevertheless viewing and interacting with this trendy mirror display looks to be a far out experience, yet I can't help pondering that using it for long periods could cause hedonism and a sore finger !

Apple’s Pond Rippling App Store Hyperwall at WWDC

WWDC or the Worldwide Developers Conference that occurred recently at San Francisco’s Moscone Center West showcased a flirtatious 5 by 12 foot wall display. Made from twenty 30″ Cinema Displays showcasing the icons of 20,000 of the most popular applications on the iTunes App Store. The icons pulsate and send a light wave rippling outward every time an app is downloaded from the store.

Apple has said 3,000 apps are downloaded every minute and the Hyperwall simultaneously resonates a rhizome of multiple pond ripples, visually drawing a liquidity map of iphone and ipodtouch App sales.

Here are three videos each with their individualized enthrallment of pixelating pond ripples; the first is on the image of this post the second is from touch lab, whereas the third is from abearknowshow.

Banksy stages an audacious act of defiance @ Bristol's museum

Banksy the infamous international graffitti artist slices through the ogre of his local council, Bristol, and holds a huge exhibition in its museum.

According to the BBC, Banksy said:
"This is the first show I've ever done where taxpayers' money is being used to hang my pictures up rather than scrape them off." A burned-out ice-cream van is among 100 works Banksy has installed at Bristol's museum, replacing many of the museum's regular artefacts. The reason the museum was closed was kept secret from top council officials since October, with just a couple of museum officials in the loop. Staged in the council-owned City Museum and Art Gallery, Banksy v Bristol Museum features animatronics, installations and a sensory display. The exhibition and its location have been a closely-guarded secret "I think we may have dragged them down to our level rather than being elevated to theirs," said Banksy of the subterfuge involved in staging the show in his home city."

Watch the BBC video to get a handle on the size and scale of his exhibition. The image I included here is a video of Banksy's public appreciation including some shots of him making his work.

Here also is a video to help you explore the different locations of his many street art piece's with map references to help you find your way around the Banksy tour of Bristol.

Big Red : a Diy 18-ft. Tall Robotic Exoskeleton

According to Charles Crain of PopSci

"Carlos Owens had handled all kinds of machines as an army mechanic, but he always dreamed of using those skills for one project: his own 'mecha,' a giant metal robot that could mirror the movements of its human pilot. Owens, 31, began building an 18-foot-tall, one-ton prototype at his home in Wasilla, Alaska, in 2004. Working without blueprints, he first built a full-scale model out of wood. Moving on to steel, he had to devise a hydraulics system that would provide precisely the right leverage and range of movement. He settled on a complex network of cables and hydraulic cylinders that can make the mecha raise its arms, bend its knees, and even do a sit-up. ... He foresees mechas having uses in the military and the construction industry, but acknowledges that right now they're best suited to entertainment." : continue reading

Here's a short video of Big Red in action and here's the designer talking about his big mechanical beast.

Its likely that the computer graphics emanated Mechatroids that were seen in Ridley Scotts' sci-fi film Alien, planted a seed of desire in Carlos Owen of Alaska, to actually build a real one.

Le Scaphandrier or The Diver : A Giant Awakes in Nantes

Faucher Romain here presents us a video of the latest performance of Le Scaphandrier (The Diver) by the French mechanical marionette street theater company Royale De Luxe.

"Nantes, the home town of Jules Verne, is situated in western France. Here, near the river Loire a giant deep-sea diver sleeps gently, waiting for his task to begin. Sadness marks his face even as he sleeps. He has been searching the world over for his missing niece and although he may not know it, the end of his search is coming. The diver or scaphandrier as he is known in French will be paraded through the streets of this historic city at the beginning of the Estuary 2009 arts festival. The biannual festival gives the French mechanical marionette street theater company Royale de Luxe the opportunity to unveil their latest creation." continue reading

If the Little Girl Giant weighs in at 42 ton and the Diver appears to be more than three times larger we may begin to appreciate the enormity of the project and be amazed at the spectacular nature of maneuvering such a huge puppet around in public domains !

Oceansize : : a sci fi cyberpunk Animation

A group of students from the Animation Supinfocom college in Arles , Romain Jouandeau, Adrien Chartie, Gilles Mazières and Fabien Thareau, recently produced a short 9 min 3D CG movie.

I'm beginning to feel at a loss as more and more the term 3D is applied to a huge variety of media. The creators/makers in this instance are moreso echoing the names and references of the software packages they used and how their best of intentions relied heavily on imitating real world experiences. The movie evidently took 100's of hours of invested labor and a keen sense of exploiting the best from their software, Realflow and Dreamscape among others.

Be sure to check out the makers website for their insightful production proclivities.

Mario Sogno created the whole clever soundtrack, check out more on his myspace page.

William Rood : : Fractal Web Toy

Freelance mathematician, filmmaker, visionary artist, designer, and author of 'Introducing Fractal Geometry,' William Rood has built, a streaming visual spaghetti of fractal heaven.

Navigating the interface seems to have been left up to viewers to explore and discover, but if you click the top arrow on the inner left side, the fractal generator will cycle through the slides at the bottom. Also the very small square at the bottom right, zooms to full screen, and collapsing the full screen by pressing the Escape key on your keyboard, will allow further selections.

The fractal manifolds Rood has encoded are somewhat reminiscent of Kai's Power Tools, Fractal Explorer, continue.

Volume Slicing Display, University of Tokyo

"A system for interactive exploration of volumetric data using a tangible screen, called the Volume Slicing Display. The system tracks the shape and the position of a passive screen (a piece of plexiglass) on 3D space using a custom monocular high-speed vision system (Vision Chip) or Artoolkit markers; then a set of projectors project the corresponding slice of a 3D virtual object on the surface in real time. This experimental interface will enable multiple users to feel as if 3D virtual objects co-exist in real space, as well as to explore them interactively using cheap passive projection surfaces (plexiglass or even paper)."

This new display is insanely cool.

"The goal of this group is to research methods for capturing and manipulating information that is normally inaccessible to humans and machines. In doing so, we hope to create new ways of perceiving the world and interacting with technology. Our research methods span fields such as human-computer interaction, media arts, physiology, and ethics."

The LCDetar : : A Video Guitar

With major advancements in modeling software and blazing fast digital audio conversion, Ben Lewry realized his vision and produced in 3 months at a cost of about $5000, a Video Guitar.

"The "LCDetar" was born with the urge to place an entire laptop inside a guitar. This is the first guitar to use an embedded LCD monitor which is capable of generating it's own interactive visuals in high resolution. It is also loaded with onboard audio processing having a huge internal library of virtual effects, amps, speaker cabinets, and sampling software. A total of eighteen different midi functions are available through the 13 controls on top along with a remote expression pedal. At the touch of a button, this guitar can be reconfigured a thousand different ways."

Each guitar is a custom job, but you can contact Ben Lewry at Visionary Instruments for more information. Nevertheless see it in action, here.
