Plastic Contamination of the Worlds Oceans

The issue of plastic contamination in the ocean is rapidly gaining a lot of attention. The repercussions are first and foremost affcting the ocean’s eco-system. Beyond that, plastics function as a magnet for chemicals such as PCB’s in water. Fish which swallow both the small and large bits of plastic, ingest the chemicals, and in-turn are ingested by humans.

"Capt. Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation first discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch -- an endless floating waste of plastic trash. Now he's drawing attention to the growing, choking problem of plastic debris in our seas."

Watch Captain Charles Moore in this video shed more light on the daunting ramifications of our throw away plastic debris into the oceans

Rovine (or Ruins) by Visioni

is "an imaginary vision about a necessary end of the journey, when the possibility to go on has disappeared. It is necessary to return to the starting point."

This accomplished Media Art piece is composed by musician Francesco Difiore on piano & electronics with video by Valeria Dimatteo.

"Visioni is a multimedia project. The Visioni musical characteristics are a fusion between piano tone and prerecorded electronics. It is a unitary work divided in eight very different, yet linked pieces. They are like book chapters; a tale about the story of the human evolution from early origin to the last, and inevitable, self-destruction. It is an ideal “life cycle” narrated with music through the eight pieces."

Cyril Raffaelli : : Amazing Stuntman

Cyril Raffaelli is one of the best martial arts talents to hail from France. An expert in shotokan karate and wushu, Raffaelli has been a regular stuntman in films.

The image to the right links to his website from which you have a arrange of video's to watch. Among his extraordinary stunts is the unbelievable maneuvers of entering the open window of a car door, a kind of half flip backward somersault and without scraping any edges of the open window.

From the time I discovered his website I have been listening to the music track he has embedded into his Video Web Portal.

Hot Undersea Volcano's Erupt Near Tonga

An underwater volcano exploded near Tonga in the South Pacific to stunning effect a few days ago. The pictures of gas and steam erupting out of the surface of the water continues to captivate the world.

"Tonga's head geologist, Kelepi Mafi, said there was no apparent danger to residents of Nuku'alofa and others living on the main island of Tongatapu. Officials also said it may be related to a quake with a magnitude of 4.4 which struck last March 13 around 35 kilometers from the capital at a depth of nearly 150 kilometres."

In this video the onlookers are stunned by the sight of the plumes of steam, ash and smoke that are shooting up to 100 meters into the air, off the coast of Nuku’Alofa, Tonga. Towards the end of the video you overhear the viewers beginning to panic, fearing that the eruptions are growing towards them.

A recipe for an unusual looping audio interface

Original Hamster presents: Beat blender

"Have you ever wondered what a banana mixed with a strawberry sounds like? Or how about kiwi-watermelon puree? Watch this video and you will find out. I found this old blender from a flea market and noticed that the names of the different blending modes are very similar to the terminology used in DJing. So I [...]" "The audio tracks are triggered by inserting different fruits into the blender. The buttons on the front panel control the mixing modes and you also have two different types of transformer switches for cutting the sound in and out."

AC Propulsion Converts your car to Electric Power

Its now possible to convert your gasoline guzzler to an inexpensive electric powered vehicle. This video demonstrates the ease with which a conversion can be achieved.

"Basically, electric conversion involves removing the entire internal combustion engine from a vehicle, installing an electric motor in its place, and also adding a large bank of batteries. A conversion will cost about $6000 in parts, and about $1000-$3000 for batteries and installation. But, for this up-front expense, you’ll get a zero-emissions vehicle that costs only a few cents per mile to run. Your electric car will also be more reliable and require much less maintenance that a gas-powered one. Remember that gas-powered cars cost the owner about $1800 per year on average for fuel costs alone, and there is the additional expense of engine maintenance and oil changes. Electric cars have a better resell value, and are more reliable overall because there are fewer parts to fail. Most of the components are solid-state electronics with no moving parts. The engine of an electric car has a virtually infinite lifespan — the components will probably outlast the chassis. The only recurring expense is the batteries, which will need to be replaced about every 3 to 4 years. You can expect your converted vehicle to have a range of 60-80 miles, a top speed of 50-90 MPH, and good acceleration capabilities. It will take about 6-12 hours to completely recharge the car. All of these factors will vary, based on the weight of the car you convert, and the type of engine and batteries you install."

The beauty of this system is how readily it can be adopted worldwide. The complex circuitry involved in tZero technology allows the driver to charge the car with 120V, 208V or 240V outlets from their residence or office.

BMW recently used the AC Propulsion system to power their new Mini-E. It only takes a small jump in one's imagination to see other car manufacturers hoping on the bandwagon in adopting this technology !

Bicycle Built for Two Thousand

is a project created by Aaron Koblin and Daniel Massey, resembles a kind of electronic sampled A cappella choir.

You may remember HAL singing the song at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey, as he was being disconnected.

"Daisy Bell," was written by Harry Dacre in 1892 but initially was made famous in 1961 by Max Mathews, John Kelly, and Carol Lockbaumas as the first example of computer-synthesized voice. In contrast;

"Bicycle Built For 2,000 is comprised of 2,088 voice recordings collected via Amazon's Mechanical Turk web service. Workers were prompted to listen to a short sound clip, then record themselves imitating what they heard."

The work is accompanied by a visual interface that allows a viewer to explore the large collection of voices that were sampled (by mousing over the video and clicking on that element).

The Sixth Sense Wearable Thin Air Computer

Pattie Maes' from the MIT lab, demonstrates in this video, (6:47), a future ubiquitous gesture recognition interface, made possible by one of her students, Pranav Mistry. It's a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment.

The invention is both a camera and a projector. The camera figures out what you are doing (e.g., reading a newspaper, holding a bottle of wine) and then uses the projector to display additional, contextually relevant information (e.g., providing additional real-time updates on a news story, displaying the Parker points for a bottle of wine).

Ones hands are used to interact with the projected image to drive the interface. An interesting use is when the demonstrator stands in front of another person and the device projects a tagcloud onto the person , the net computer element then projects the information from his or her blog, after the camera recognizes who it is.

Inventor Creates Winged submarines that "fly" underwater

Graham Hawkes a world-renowned engineer and inventor, wants to revolutionize the way we experience the oceans. He has been in the business of building submersibles for more than a decade. His company, Hawkes Ocean Technologies , built vehicles for researchers and moviemakers, and for the ultra rich he built The Super Falcon.

Now he has prototyped a more affordable version so that more people can fly with Great White shark or find some territories that humans have never seen before?

"On one of the submersible's first test voyages, Hawkes' team encountered a group of hammerhead sharks. The sharks were curious and swam around the watercraft. One engaged the sub in a game of chicken, only to veer off at the last minute. It was a great reward, Hawkes said."

The drive train of the flying sub is powered by batteries and turbines and engineered with special care to be incredibly quiet. The vehicle also is very maneuverable enabling it to navigate in strong currents, (video).

Alan Watts On Purposelessness by n0 badges

This animation is "inspired by the audio recordings of Alan Watts. This edited segment comes from 'Man In Nature', a lecture from the Tao of Philosophy series."

"Alan Watts was a British philosopher, writer, speaker, and student of comparative religion. He was best known as an interpreter and popularizer of Asian philosophies for a Western audience. He wrote more than 25 books and numerous articles on subjects such as personal identity, the true nature of reality, higher consciousness, meaning of life, concepts and images of God and the non-material pursuit of happiness. In his books he relates his experience to scientific knowledge and to the teachings of Eastern and Western religion and philosophy."

Infinity Mirror : : panorama

Yayoi Kusama's “Fireflies on the Water' Installation is part of Mirrored Years, a large scale major exhibition that spans decades of her artistic practice.

Famously involved with obliteration of reality and even her self, in all her life's work, she has been obsessed with dots or in effect blotting out reality. Her fields of dots are either 'infinity dots' (positive) or 'infinity nets' (negative).

Here, Peter Murphy magically captures a globular interrior of the work for us to zoom around in, which in an intimate way demonstrates a metaphor of the universe itself .

The exhibition is at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Sydney, Circular Quay until June 8

Cali Lewis: Shiny Happy Tech Geek Seeks Job in Australia

Cali offers us her insights on th latest product refresh from Apple who’ve updated iMacs, the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro.

"Out of everything that’s changed, I’m most excited about the new Airport Extreme. It now simultaneously and separately supports 2.4GHz data Wi-Fi AND 5GHz Wi-Fi. That means your need for speed on your computer isn’t throttled by all the 2.4GHz wireless devices you have in your house. The new Extreme also supports up to 50 users and guests can be on a different network to keep data on your network secure."

Although I'm a Mac user, the latest update to the mini is beyond a joke when it comes to putting the readies down on one Australia, read why here. Also its interesting to note that the mini has among its ports a Firewire 800, whereas in the latest Macbooks the Firewire port has been omitted. Maybe they realised to late in the production that they simply made a mistake in not including it ?

Portrait of Leonardo da Vinci as a young man Uncovered

Until today there has never been a portrait of the young Leonardo da Vinci.

An Italian Science reporter (Piero Angela), spotted a nose amongst some writing in a codex on the flight of birds in one of the Leonardo 's sketch books

Criminal investigation techniques were used to digitally age the new portrait and it was found to be identical to the familiar old da Vinci.

Coolerado: Off Grid Solar Powered Air Conditioner

Coolerado Air Conditioner units use water to chill fresh, outside air, without adding moisture to a building, and consume just 15 percent of the energy used by traditional air conditioners. The system is run by 4 photovoltaic solar panels and uses about 600 watts of electricity, that is, one third the power of a conventional hair dyer !

All the power used to run the system is being collected from the sun and the exhaust air is fed back into the system to increase power generation and cool the panels. The unit only has 2 moving parts: the fan and the solenoid valve that turns the water from the building on and off as use is required. Average water use is 4 gallons per hour, equivalent to an extra shower or 2 per day, 4 photovoltaic solar panels produce full power at 72 degrees F.

"Traditional refrigerant and compressor based systems are basically just the opposite. That is, they draw a lot of power when it is cool out and that is when they can do the most work. As temperatures rise, the compressor has to work harder, they draw even more power, and do less work."

The Coolerado on the other hand uses thermodynamics to cool outside air without chemical refrigerants.

Watch an introductory video, visit the Coolerado website and read a review of the unit.
