Lindsay Packer : two kinetic, light-based installations

"Using popular printed imagery, found objects, light, toys and text, I investigate the line between what we know and what we suspect about the things we see. Inspired by a year of study and travel in India, my most recent body of work (video) focuses on translation, communication and first encounters. Informed by fairy tales, science textbooks and language primers, my paintings, collages and light-based installations examine entry-level curiosity. Children, animals, and other ‘beginners’ attempt to understand the world, each other, difference. In my work, complex structures, simple mechanics and elementary linguistic, scientific and visual vocabularies help question the relationship between object and shadow, cause and effect, original and translation."

Solar-powered Trilobot meanders a variety of terrains

"Trilobot is a complex machine in the tradition of W. Grey Walter or Valentino Braitenberg. In construction philosophy it is inspired by the likes of Mark Tilden, David Hrynkiw and Robert Full, in aesthetic by Arthur Ganson and Theo Jansen. This robot is entirely solar powered so it's autonomous in control and energy acquisition (no batteries or remote)."

The image I posted here (from Endgadget) makes this solar-powered robot from Dan Roe appear rather menacing, but it is, however quite cute. Once you have seen it navigating a variety of terrains, you will probably wonder when you can get one !

Panorama: Brian Eno Audio-light installation on Sydney Opera House sails

is part of Luminous light festival in Sydney. From May 27, the sails will be lit from 6pm - 1 am every night until June 13.

Luminous is a festival of music, ideas, light and performance presented at the Sydney Opera House curated by Brian Eno. Thie festival features a plethora of music acts, alongside public talks and spectacular light and art installations, and is presented in partnership with Sony as part of Vivid Sydney.

The projected slides are from a large audio-visual work 77 Million Paintings which uses 'self-generating software' to manipulate 300 of Eno's drawings. He says it aims to provoke 'visual ecstasy' and 'heightened calm'.

Here, Peter Murphy has provided us with a better than real life panoramic close up of Brian Eno's projection, viewing east across Sydney Cove.

Hi, a real human interface. by Multitouch Barcelona

"Multitouch Barcelona is a recently born interaction design group that explores natural communication between people and technology. They design touch sensitive environments where real world interactions move to a digital context. Interfaces where people touch, play, move, feel...Where senses play their natural role, where everything just 'happens" as it does in the real world."

There seems to be an unbelievable amount of skill required in being this real human interface.

Whilst watching, just remember you still have the freedom to stand upright, anytime !

Towards Artificial Robotic Consciousness or Engineering Recognition of self

Dr. Takeno at Meiji University is researching Artificial consciousness and has built a robot that can recognize itself in a mirror nearly 100% of the time which he intends to use as the basis for the development of artificial limbs.

"We are making a recognition system in the robot so when the robot looks in the mirror it can recognize itself and the other robot and then checks to see if the other robot does the same movement as itself."

In the first experiment, different color LEDs are attached to the robots sensors to indicate when it sees itself and follows it own movements, sees a different robot moving around and when it sees a different robot while at the same time doing the same actions as the other robot. Here in this video the blue light means recognition that the test robot is seeing itself.

"My area of interest lies in the treatment method of patients who have lost consciousness due to disease or accidents. The model I made might be able to help locate where in the brain the damage occurs and how to stimulate those areas and possibly revive the patient."

Thomas Traxler's The Idea of a Tree : : An Autonomous production device

is a solar-powered system that fabricates objects from epoxy, dye and string, by turning a spindle. Solar energy generates electrical energy, which drives the motor, draws the string through the dye and onto the spindle: a chain of analog transductions produce an object that manifests specific changes in its local environment.

"The installation is powered by a couple of solar cells which power the entire device, causing the process to move faster or slower depending on the amount of available light. The speed of the process determines the amount of saturation of the thread, giving a visual recording in the resulting object."

Its a kind of self styled 3D Printer depending on the armature or frame one chooses, but the finished product births the notion of locality, into the object, each day records the color intensity of the thread.

Thomas Traxler recently graduated from the IM Masters department of the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Bacterial Orchestra: Announcing New iphone Crow out happening

Created by Olle Cornéer and Martin Lübcke. Programming by Jens Berlips, Fredrik Andersson and Arne Wallander. Bacterial Orchestra is based on the concept of gathering half a dozen friends with iPhones and using software to make the phones create loops of music.

A huge musical organism that is not only self-organizing, but also evolving with the sound environment.

Exactly what roll human activity is playing in this gathering is unclear except for an isolated human sound sample, minimalist behavior looks to be the key. Nevertheless to get the most from this new "viral" video, turn your volume up .

"Every device works as an audio cell: listening and picking out sounds, then playing them back to create music This means trying to play in rhytym with what it hears, but also listening for phrases and melodies to complete. The one's that are fit enough musically survives. The other die and are reborn with new parameters - a new set of DNA The result is a self-organizing musical organism, constantly changing amd evolving together with the audience and the sound environment The cells only communicate through audio. The installation can be scaled to an unlimited number of devices."

This rhizome of collective collaboration conveys a historical association with Frippertronics, Loop Guru and more recently mass cell ringtone events.

Danger Seekers; Kap10Kurt by Scrapture,

is an entertaining little sci fi animae. I feel the music track drives the action and although a little momotonous at times, worked better at a lower volume.

Aerial Panorama's of New York

The image seen here is of Downtown New York and captured by photographers Oleg Gaponyuk and Andrei Zubets for, Pixelcase Virtual Tours. The set of seven panoramas are accompanied by a smoothly gliding sound bed.

If you are new to panoramas you can navigate or steer these panorama's around with your depressed mouse and drag, zoom in and out with the shift and control keys, or use the on board tool set.

Of the seven panoramas I prefer the Governors Island panorama, which is your favorite ?

Uniquely French Object : : Chanel Mobile Art Container

The artistic director Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel together with Zaha Hadid created possibly the first and only ever, from the Architecturaly Designed ground up, mobile Art Museum.

The container is made of gleaming-white fiberglass with a ring of interactive exhibition spaces inside which closely resembles an open woman's parfait case.

The Mobile Art Container, which was to roam the world from 2008 to 2010 bearing installations by 18 international artists, is now over. Nevertheless this video link enables you to view all facets of the museum's conception, fabrication and planning. The web portal also offers you the opportunity to take virtual tour of the interiors with a smorgasbord of art installations among them a live tattooed pig in a cage plus grunts !

Color flOw by brian Iannone

A cheeky name in the light of Apple's Cover Flow, nevertheless please excuse the sudden link to my initial engagement with Fine art and Literature....... once upon a time I was completely absorbed in studying the works of Savador Dali, the images in those books used to keep my mind and body absorbed for hours at a time. This led me into reading Aldous Huxley's Doors to Perception and Herman Hesse's Glass Bead Game.

Similarly I think this young man's video of Food coloring being dropped into water, could help you find the faces I found in the cloud of Cover fLOw.

Although the soundtrack Recurring by Bonobo might be less of a concern if it weren't for the rather abrupt ending to an otherwise rather enlightening yet simple idea.

Firefly 870 LED

is a L.E.D. light prototype, which pairs 870 wind switches with 870 super-bright white LEDs to form an 8'x8' grid. Jason Krugman connected the 870 LEDs to wind switches he constructed by hand.

Looking at this piece in motionless-form resembles a close-up view of sequins as the base of each wind switch is a clear, round disc. As the wind blows over the piece, the wind switches trigger each LED individually, creating a stunning sparking effect in response to wind achieved in this video by fanning the air across the curtains.

Yooouuutuuube : : absolutely delightful Web Toy

that turns a single YouTube video into a surreal grid made of copies of itself. The rows of the grid are slightly out of sync with one another, creating a ripple effect.

Mouse over the bottom of your open window to control the options which include the frame size of the grid squares and the size of the rows and columns. While you're watching, there are pan, track and zoom controls that let you move over the whole bizarre like it was one screen.

I made this one with Checkersplitter by Degenerate Art Ensemble

One of the best demonstrations of how much fun Yooouuutuuube can be is this amazing Alice in Wonderland, or you may fancy the Dramatic Chipmunk.

Have a go, make your yooouuutuuube, then paste your yooouuutuuube video links in the Comments below.

Tenori-on Meets Kyma by Nomad Cinema

"Tenori-on is an electronic musical instrument, designed and created by Japanese artist, Toshio Iwai and Yu Nishibori of the Music and Human Interface Group, Yamaha Center for Advanced Sound Technology. It consists of a screen, held in the hands, of a sixteen by sixteen grid of LED switches, any of which can be activated in a number of ways to create an evolving musical soundscape. The LED switches are held within a aluminum frame, which has two built-in speakers located on the top of frame, as well as a dial and buttons that control the type of sound and beats per minute produced. There is also an LCD screen on the bottom edge of the frame. Using the connection function, it is possible to play a synchronized session, or to send and receive songs between two of the devices."

"In order to tap the real power of Yamaha's new Tenori-on, it helps to pair it with external equipment capable of producing more satisfying sounds than the somewhat lackluster soundset included with the Tenori-on itself. In this video, no internal Tenori-on sounds were used whatsoever. Tenori-on is functioning purely as a sequencer with external equipment, including advanced sound-shaping from Kyma and analog synthesis from Alesis Andromeda and Dave Smith's Prophet '08. Sequencer data coming from Tenori-on is processed in Ableton Live (utilizing midi scale and chord filters, as well as injecting some generative randomness) before reaching Kyma, Andromeda, and Prophet '08."

WindCube : : Innovative and Cost effective Wind Turbine

Green Energy Technologies has unveiled a new wind power generator. The device is capable of generating 60kW of rooftop power for commercial and industrial applications. The turbine captures and amplifies wind and can be installed in single 60kW or dual 120kW configurations.

The WindCube measures 22 x 22 x 12 feet and uses the Bernoulli Principal to generate electricity from the wind by concentrating the wind using a shroud, allowing the generator to make power with wind speeds as low as 5 mph.

This conveniently compacted smart energy unit simplifies the transport and installation as well as doubling the power generation capacity over a conventional wind tower whilst reducing the physical footprint and cost by half.

Trompe-L'oeil Drawing of Disappearing Car

A design Art student Sara Watson made a battered old Skoda 'vanish' by painting it to merge with the surrounding car park. Sara who is studying drawing at the University of Central Lancashire, took three weeks to transform the car's appearance.

"I was experimenting with the whole concept of illusion but needed something a bit more physical to make a real impact."

She created the illusion in the car park outside her studio at Uclan's Hanover Building in Preston. The car is now being used for advertising by the local recycling firm that donated the vehicle.

Noteboek : Profoundly Cool, paper illusions animation

Here I am, looking at a screen, showing a small video...of a fake screen, showing a small video.

Evelien Lohbeck has created this paper wireless notebook animation illusion.

"Noteboek (English title: Notebook) consists of 4 short experimental films where I try to confuse the reality. In these films, illusions and expectations are challenged."

Perhaps it goes without saying, but as any website designer well tell you, the best way to design a website, is on a sheet of paper.

But hey, no respectable user using a paper netbook would use internet explorer ?
