Pseudo-3D Video Conferencing with a Generic Web cam

Chris Harrison and Scott Hudson have developed a method;

"for producing a pseudo-3D experience using only a single generic web cam at each end. This means nearly any computer currently able to video conference can use our technique, making it readily adoptable. Although using comparatively simple techniques, the 3D result is convincing. "

This idea seems like an interesting step towards immersive telepresence, but behind the scenes, it relies on a clever illusory trick (motion parallax) and head-tracking.

Antarctica Diving with Stacy Kim & SCINI

Dr. Stacy Kim is a Benthic Ecologist and diver who studies sea floor creatures in Antarctica waters that are below freezing. Her research team developed SCINI (Submersible Capable of Under Ice Navigation and Imaging) for deployment beneath the ice to study depths below where divers can go. In this video, Stacy tells about diving the extreme cold water beneath Antarctic ice, and how SCINI makes possible even greater capabilities to explore and record the sea floor life in polar regions. Videographer Henry Kaiser captures the footage of Stacy with SCINI diving beneath the Ross Sea ice near the Antarctic Base, McMurdo Station.

ThermaVolt: : Solar hybrid system Harvests the Sun’s Light & Heat

Traditionally there have been two types of solar panels, a type that can produce clean electricity or heat your water. Entech Solar has developed a new type of panel that does both.

"The solar unit has both photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert the sun’s light into usable energy and a fluid-filled pipe to trap the sun’s heat and use it to warm water. The device is efficient and economical due to a Frensel lens that concentrates sunlight to 20X its normal power. With such intense light, the amount of PV cells required is 95% less than that of a traditional solar panel. The lens also serves to increase the amount of heat that reaches the fluid-filled pipe."

Check out this video detailing how the ThermaVolt™ system works: ThermaVolt Video.

Brightphase Energy is another company building products that produce both electricty and heat. Their Photensity panel contains silicon solar cells rated at 18 percent efficiency for electricity generation. They also contain a fluid filled pipe that can be used to heat the building’s water. In addition, because the cells are mounted on seperated strips that look like venetian blinds, the panels can let light into the building, which reduces the need for artificial light during the day.

Solvatten: makes unsafe water drinkable using solar heat.

Access to clean drinking water is a major problem for many of the world’s people. Now a relatively simple device called the Solvatten hopes to provide a solution to the issue.

The Solvatten combines heat, UV and built-in filter in a specially designed container to clean contaminated water by filtrating macro-organisms which cause diseases.

"Similar to a standard jerrycan, the Solvatten can hold 10 liters of water, divided into two 5 liter compartments, each with a clear face. When you open the device and place it in the sun, exposing the two chambers to sunlight. This heats the water to 50-60°C, killing any pathogens which are present in a few hours. An indicator signals when the water is safe to drink (it changes from red to green). The whole process takes 3-4 hours in sunny conditions and 5-6 hours if it is cloudy."

Here, inventor Petra Wadström provides a thorough demonstration of the Solvatten device. Otherwise you may prefer a quick intro.

Solvatten means sun and water. This video reportage was made on the cleantech innovation in Nepal.

LoopLoop: : A very long panoramic sequence by Patrick Bergeron

LoopLoop (5 mins.) is an "image" built from a 33 seconds video sequence.

"in a train going to Hanoi in Vietnam, I filmed the houses boarding the railroad. The 1000 images of this sequences have been stitched into one long panoramic image."

LoopLoop is also a "video" loop.

"Into the long image, I integrated other moving elements and builted smooth transitions over it. The soundtrack have been built using the original video sound. "

Bergeron produced this work using Final Cut Studio, Sound Edit and some Perl, he says

"In my present life ... I'm video artist and researcher, I modify and manipulate the image and its details. I’m interested about the concepts of speed, memories and the image components. My work is a mix of animation, abstract film and documentary. For the last 15 years, I’m working in special effect for the film industry. I’m a “digital compositor”. I worked on some of the most challenging shots on films like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix."

Experimental dance/video by Isabelle Preuilh & Bottega Bologna

Accado da Capo is an intense experimental game played between dancer and videographer as much as by the music and the video editor.

The body of the dancer rolls as the camera itself rolls and cavorts as we are aurally and visually captured with an anxious anticipation of what might happen and are persuaded by the audio track to keep focus on the action.

You are rewarded with a close up image of the dancer if you are cool enough to experience the work beyond the credits.

Cyclones on Saturn

"The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn recently drifted in giant planet’s shadow for about 12 hours and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn and slightly scattering sunlight, in the above exaggerated color image. Saturn’s rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the above image. Visible in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn’s E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus, and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, visible on the image left just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth."

Here is a composite video made with new images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft revealing a giant cyclone on Saturn's north pole, and show that a similarly monstrous cyclone churning at Saturn's south pole.

The trouble with Crimson

Although this video (crimson) by dorota janecka was originally meant as a a "visual response to Ken Nordine lyrics on the subject of color" its message rings with much contemporary meaning.

"Ken Nordine (born April 13, 1920) is an American voice over and recording artist best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that "you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you'll almost certainly recognize his voice."

The voice in the video may seem to have an uncanny likeness to Ken Nordine's voice, yes ?

Objectified : : Designers talking about design

“Objectified is a feature-length independent documentary about industrial design. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. It’s about our relationship to mass-produced objects and, by extension, the people who design them.”

A designers job is about whats going to happen not whats already happened. Here is a documentary film by Gary Hustwit and the voices belong to Jonathan Ive, Andrew Blauvelt, Marc Newson, and Karim Rashid. The song is 'I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool' by El Ten Eleven, from their new record; These Promises Are Being Videotaped.

Lensbaby Composer; Tilt shift photography made easy

Intrepid reporter Cali Lewis from GeekBrief tv interviews Craig Strong, Lensbaby's president and co-founder who introduces a Lens Baby attachment for any contemporary wide body SLR.

Lensbaby is a lens that swivels on a ball and socket connection

" ...that delivers smooth selective focus photography with unparalleled ease. The Composer retains its position after being bent and is easy to use even with one hand. The Composer stays in the desired bent position without requiring a locking mechanism and features a new Lensbaby Optic Swap System. The Composer features a unique manual focus design which requires more rotation to move the optic as you approach infminity. This makes it easier to focus on objects at intermediate and distant depths than regular manual focus lenses."

Towards the end of the video Cali Lewis's Canon5D HD is used to demonstrate how easy the Lensbaby is attached to any compatible SLR.

In order to see the video go here and download the video type of your choice. It's worth noting that the small size video was surprisingly clear even watching it full screen on my 20".

Enormous undersea wall discovered

"A giant rock formation resembling a city wall has been discovered under the Taiwan Strait.
The 220m stretch of basalt rock was found by biodiversity researcher Jeng Ming-hsiou. He said it was likely to have been formed by a volcanic eruption up to 1,800 years ago."

Although this latest geological discovery looks as if it was man made there is nothing unusual about how volcanoes seem to have for millenia manufactured man made forms. We often forget how we humans perceive and read the world around us. We have merely reproduced objects based on the inspiring natural forms around us like the basalt blocks on the coast of Hong Kong or the tall square columns in Ireland.

Kite Buggy Surfing

Whether you call it Kite buggying or Fly surfing it looks to offer its users occasional lift as seen here:

"The kite buggy is a light, purpose-built vehicle powered by a traction kite (power kite). It is single-seated and has one steerable front wheel and two fixed rear wheels. The driver sits in the seat located in the middle of the vehicle and accelerates and slows down by applying steering manoeuvres in coordination with flying manoeuvres of the kite. The kite buggy was probably invented in China around the 13th century. It was rediscoverd by George Pocock in the UK in 1827 and kite buggies were available commercially in US and UK in the late 1970's. Peter Lynn is generally attributed with the modern popularization of buggies and kite buggying with his introduction of strong, lightweight, affordable buggies in the early 1990's." The activity is very popular and requires large flatland geographical locations. Some video makers of this activity are sometimes very creative as seen in this one.

The Yoshimoto Cube: An Intriguing Geometrical Toy

is the transformation of two stellated rhombic dodecahedrons from a cube.

Naoki Yoshimoto (1971) discovered this cube when he was searching for a way to divide a cube equally in three-dimensional space. The result is a peculiar polyhedral dyad consisting of eight interconnected cubes that can be opened in multiple ways. The cube can be divided into two cubes and then transformed into two rhombuses, one silver the other gold with twelve faces each.

Here's a neat demonstration video, or you can see a line-art animation of the toy's action here at The World of Geometric Toy.

If you would like to make your own paper version then for the Origami enthusiast, download this file. Or if you prefer easier methods of getting a quicker model, then print and fold one of these.

2009; the International Year of Astronomy

just look up experience, learn, and enjoy the changing sky.

2009 was chosen by the International Astronomical Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization because it occurs 400 years after Galileo turned one of the first telescopes toward the heavens. Peering through that small window, Galileo discovered that the Moon has craters, Venus has phases, Jupiter has moons, and Saturn has rings.

Here is a short compilation of stills from the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA, and multiple ground based observers. The music is "Conversations" by Freddie Ravel.

The Opening ceremony of the International Year of Astronomy will officially take place in Paris, January 15-16, 2009, under the aegis of the UN, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), the IAU (International Astronomical Union).
